Well OK then.

I was going to talk about the tools I use to make Plant-Man + Flowerin’ today but I’ll have to leave that for another day.
As I spoke about in my last blog post I’m spending this weekend pumping out a 3 page comic, so the tools I use to make a comic don’t really matter that much right now.
What is important are the tools to help me get through a weekend where I have to get a 3 page story done from scratch to final ink!
So here we go:
I think you’re good to get through a deadline like this with only one of these things, but there’s no sense not being prepared, right? Right.
Groovy Gravy is a Brisbane comic institution, and has been for around a gajillion years. It’s an anthology book published sporadically and I’ve been a fan since the first issue.
I’ve been involved with it on and off again – after they kindly put a character wearing a Plant-Man + Flowerin’ t-shirt in the second issue, and a fan letter in an issue shortly after that, I even got the chance to write a page for…I think it was issue eight? At any rate it’ll appear on this site shortly. It was a full page adventure of Daisy The Moo Moo Cow!
Anyway, fast forward to now, and I’ve been asked if I’ll be interested in doing a story for issue 11 which will be sold at Supa Nova in a few weeks. Of course I jumped at the chance.
So if you’ll excuse me I have to hit the drawing board. I think a 3 page Plant-Man + Flowerin’ story would be good.
Or maybe a 3 page Action Sally story?
Hmm.
Anyway, later.
Over on Funny Webcomic – my daily webcomic with a different theme and cast of characters each week – I’ve added a poll where people can vote on what the following week’s theme will be. It was one of the ideas I had for the launch of the site but the wife wisely advised me that nobody would car enough to vote then. She was right, and now that there’s around 200 strips on the site people have developed a taste for it.
I’m happy that people are voting now, because I love the idea that old strip ideas can be resurrrected if there’s enough demand for it and I’m also free to explore new ideas if that’s what you guys want. It’s cool watching Funny Webcomic evolve like that, especially since the original original idea was that it was just going to be “Generic Gaming Comic” and it wasn’t until I visited the hospital shortly after launching it I drew “Medical Drama Comic” and changed everything.
Um, anyway. Voting! It turned out good on Funny Webcomic, but I’m unsure about it’s implementation on Plant-Man. Until now I just had a simple “What’s your favourite character?” poll, but maybe I should change it. A poll about the plot of the current storyline? A poll about what the next storyline should be about? A poll about the art?
So I’ve decided to make a poll about the future of the poll. Everyone get on Plant-Man’s big poll!
I have a Wacom tablet and after or so years of futzing around with it I’m actually getting the hang of the darn thing. Maybe I should take the plunge and do a Plant-Man story all digitally?
I guess it’s worth trying for a short story, just to get the hang of it. That way if it doesn’t work it’ll be over in a few days and I can chalk it up as another experiment that had varying results. One of the biggest mental stumbling blocks I had with using a Wacom tablet and my crusty old copy of Photoshop 4 I got from work was that I couldn’t see the whole page at one time. If I scaled the image out so I can take in the whole page I couldn’t draw with any good detail and if I zoomed in to fill the screen with a whole panel I’d lose my orientation. I’m just really used to the conventional pen and paper tools where I can see the whole page at once and instantly take in the flow of the story, timing of the jokes and white / black balance.
Hmm.
I do use the Wacom and Photoshop a little bit now-a-days after I scan the artwork – just fixing the occasional spelling error here and tidying up a hand there. So maybe it won’t be that far off to do the whole kit and kaboodle digitally.
Also, I’m writing this blog while I’m 32,000 feet in the air on the way to the States and I can’t pull out my drawing board even if I was in business class, so there’s that.
Thoughts, folks?
This was one of the hardest ones to figure out. My first instinct was to go for Kristen Bell for no other reason than she’s the right body type and she’s just flat out gorgeous. However the problem I have is that, well, she doesn’t seem to be that funny. And damn it, funny counts.
Let’s have a picture of her anyway.

My actual pick, and this suprised me more than anyone else, would be local TV and radio presenter Fifi Box.
She’s older than Sally’s age (which is about 25, give or take, I guess?) but that face is just totally right.

Plus choosing her over Kristen Bell also helps with the budget since I spent most of the money on hedgehog slices. Damn those things are good.
The problem with Comissioner Gorgon is that he’s really not much of a character. I mean all he does is laze about and bark orders at people. I really need to start fleshing him out more and making him at least two dimensional.
But anyway. My choice of actor for this no doubt highly sought after role would be Larry Emdur.
Never heard of him? Well he was a television presenter in Australia in the ’90s. Now I think he does a lot of motivational speaking stuff. So there.

Everyone’s just wild about Larry!
Hey, notice how all the people I’ve nominated for roles so far would be really cheap? Take notice of my awesome budgeting skills, Warner Bros.!
This one is a pretty open and shut case for me since there’s only ever been one person in the world who could ever be Flowerin’ the Seedling Wonder, at least for me.
And that man is Julian Clarey.
British? Check.
Thin? Check.
Makes lots of homosexual-flavoured double entendres? Triple check.
LOOK AT HIM.

And he’d fit into the costume just perfectly!
Maybe we covered this already but let’s give it a shot anyway. So let’s pretend that for some unfathomable reason Warner Brothers or Disney or whatever drop a truck load of cash in my front yard (hey it’ll save me from mowing it) and I sign a piece of paper saying they can go and make a Plant-Man movie. Who would be in it?
Today let’s look at our star, Plant-Man the ecologically sound super hero!
Look at his smiling face. He’s a pretty buffed up guy that looks smooth in costume or his day clothes. A lot of people think that I would pick Ben Affleck because of my latent man-crush for him but I’m not into casting the obvious choice.
OK I’d let him audition but that’s it.
Anyway my choice for the perfect Plant-Man is none other than Hugh Grant.
He’s English, and I really need an English accent for Plant-Man’s straight delivery. He’s occasionally funny, which is good for the puns. And finally, if you need any more proof, look at this:

I mean look at that grin! I remember seeing that poster when the movie came out in the cinema and thinking “yep, that’s Plant-Man and no mistake”. Fifteen off years don’t make a difference.
Thousands of years of the development of human civilization have led to this point: the release of the Plant-Man / Flowerin’ / Action Sally / Commissioner Gorgon Desktop! YES!
