Maybe I Should Go Digital

I have a Wacom tablet and after or so years of futzing around with it I’m actually getting the hang of the darn thing. Maybe I should take the plunge and do a Plant-Man story all digitally?

I guess it’s worth trying for a short story, just to get the hang of it. That way if it doesn’t work it’ll be over in a few days and I can chalk it up as another experiment that had varying results. One of the biggest mental stumbling blocks I had with using a Wacom tablet and my crusty old copy of Photoshop 4 I got from work was that I couldn’t see the whole page at one time. If I scaled the image out so I can take in the whole page I couldn’t draw with any good detail and if I zoomed in to fill the screen with a whole panel I’d lose my orientation. I’m just really used to the conventional pen and paper tools where I can see the whole page at once and instantly take in the flow of the story, timing of the jokes and white / black balance.

Hmm.

I do use the Wacom and Photoshop a little bit now-a-days after I scan the artwork – just fixing the occasional spelling error here and tidying up a hand there. So maybe it won’t be that far off to do the whole kit and kaboodle digitally.

Also, I’m writing this blog while I’m 32,000 feet in the air on the way to the States and I can’t pull out my drawing board even if I was in business class, so there’s that.

Thoughts, folks?
