Autobiografical Comeex
So this one-pager was “inspired” by three “alternative” comics artists at the time.
The first was Harvey Pekar, who writes the awesome American Splendor. The only problem with American Splendor was that it inspired a million and one knock-offs, all starring losers who wrote about their non-lives in their crappy comics. If indie comics in the ’80s are going to be remembered for the glut of crap that followed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the comics of the ’90s will go down as the torrential flood of bad autobiographical comics.
Joe Bell was the worst. He’d do these densely packed books about him masturbating all day. I mean what the hell. Who would pay for that? I like showing off a new Plant-Man page once it’s done, but can you imagine him? You wouldn’t want to touch the thing…
Oh and the other guy was Eddie Campbell. The “Paint on the top of a hill all day” line was from an interview with him in The Comics Journal. I remember getting pretty annoyed at that at the time. If you want to go and paint on top of a hill all day, then by all means get the hell out of comics, thanks!
